SOLRAD Presents: HOSTILE TAKEOVER: How A MAGA Coup Ripped My Parents’ Synagogue Apart

After Ari Richter’s parents joined a sleepy, Reform synagogue in exurban Florida, a small but organized right-wing cohort took over the temple’s board during Trump’s first term, enacting a MAGA-inspired agenda. Deep divisions ensued within the congregation along LGBTQIA issues, pre-vaccine COVID-19 protocols, and other depressingly familiar partisan fault lines.

Ari Richter is a visual artist, cartoonist and professor. He is the author of Never Again Will I Visit Auschwitz: A Graphic Family Memoir of Trauma & Inheritance (Fantagraphics Books). The grandson of Holocaust survivors and son of therapists, he lives in New York with his wife and daughters. More at aririchter.com and @ari.richter

I wasn’t involved in this synagogue, but I know someone who was at this time. I have been saying for nearly 5 years “hold up, I thought surviving plagues was kind of a central piece of Judaism. Why are they begging so hard to die of the plague?!” Anyways, I have anxiously been awaiting the publication of this piece for a really long time now and it came out FANTASTIC. Well done, Mr. Richter.

This is the obvious consequence when an institution abandons its altruistic mission. Surely, this presentation of Ari Richter is a representation of the consequences that many organizations have (and still are) experiencing when giving in to the political winds in this country.
