GO, LOOK is a new feature at SOLRAD for upcoming events that we think SOLRAD readers might find interesting. (We title this feature in loving memory of Tom Spurgeon, whose “go, look” features were the source of much internet exploration through his website The Comics Reporter.)

Cartoonist and educator Sophie Goldstein will be presenting a seminar session on August 22nd, from 2-4 PM EDT titled “Why Comics: The Possibilities of a Hybrid Medium.”
Sophie Goldstein is an accomplished cartoonist whose work has been published by Fantagraphics, Top Shelf, and AdHouse. Her latest book, An Embarrassment of Witches, was published in 2020 by Top Shelf.
Sophie will be talking about the medium of comics as part of her faculty role at Lesley University, where she is faculty in their Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing Progrma. Some of the comics that will be under review include:
- Understanding Comics, Scott McCloud
- Asterios Polyp, David Mazzuchelli
- Skim, Mariko Tamaki
- Fruit of Knowledge, Liv Strömquist
- Scott Pilgrim, Brian Lee O’Malley
- Gemma Bovary, Posy Simmons
- How To Be Happy, Eleanor Davis
- Through the Woods, Emil Carroll
The program is free and open to the public, but registration is required.
