The Comic as ‘Alternative Jurisdiction’ : Seeking Recognition and Healing for Child Sexual Abuse Survivors by Maddie Williams

Currently a student in the Illustration and Authorial Practice MA at Falmouth University in the UK, Maddie Williams wrote an essay for one of her past modules called The Comic as ‘Alternative Jurisdiction’: Seeking Recognition and Healing for Child Sexual Abuse Survivors.

In the essay, she focuses mainly on 3 examples of practice:

  • A Child’s Life and Other Stories – Phoebe Gloeckner
  • Becoming Unbecoming – Una
  • Our Little Secret – Emily Carrington

In the essay, Williams discusses how autobiographical comics can become locations for seeking extra-legal justice and healing when it comes to stories of child sexual abuse.

Editor’s Note: A downloadable pdf version of this essay is available at the bottom of this post.
