Dr. Ryan Montoya, MD is a board-certified Family Medicine physician living and working in Belgrade, Serbia. A graduate of Harvard University, he completed medical school and residency at the University of Massachusetts. His career has included full-spectrum primary care, addiction medicine, and leadership as Associate Medical Director at Planned Parenthood in Washington, DC. He has practiced in underserved communities in the United States, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and India, and previously served as Physician Medical Officer for the U.S. Embassy in Moscow.
Dr. Montoya is also a comic artist and writer specializing in graphic medicine. His work has appeared in The New England Journal of Medicine and Scientific American, and he trained at the Joe Kubert School of Comic Book Art and the Massachusetts College of Art. He has also designed luggage for Goyard. He is currently a columnist for The New England Journal of Medicine, where he writes and illustrates comics exploring the challenges and humanity of primary care.
